Designer Tips

For those of you that don’t know me, I have been an interior designer for the last 30 years in the DFW area. As a designer myself, I know firsthand it can be challenging to come up with items that work for some of your more discriminating clients, particularly if they are on a tight budget. At Estates Etcetera, we only consign upscale furniture in excellent condition. As you know, a quality piece of furniture is built to last through several lifetimes and never goes out of style.

Even for some of your younger clients wanting a modern decor, accent pieces like this corner chair provide a refreshing eclectic look when paired with more modern pieces. We also carry numerous accessories and framed prints to complete your design. The price of the custom frames alone is worth considering these framed prints a bargain accessory.

For all of your discriminating clients, don’t forget to take a look at Estates Etcetera for quality pieces that make a lifetime impression. We are open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm.

Upgrade Your Patio

Spring has officially arrived and we are ready! Several new outdoor furniture items have arrived at Estates Etcetera over the last couple of weeks. We just got a beautiful ornate iron patio set with four chairs and a large étagère. The table top is a rectangular piece of glass. This lovely addition to your patio is made to last a lifetime! Detachable cushions are included for easy maintenance of your patio space during weather.

We also have several pieces of outdoor wicker furniture. With their bright colors and easy-care fabrics they are sure to please your guests. We have a loveseat, coffee table and chair in a dark colored wicker that would make a great conversation area on a patio. The large white cushions are designed to be pulled inside during inclement weather. Paired with bright flower pillows they beckon the spring flowers in your garden.

Last but not least, is an over-sized chair and ottoman of tan colored wicker that would be perfect for a leisurely rest in the shade or a favorite summertime read. Again, the portable cushions make it easy-care for bad weather as well as cleaning.

Come pick out your favorite patio furniture today at Estates Etcetera – Consignments by Reba! We are conveniently located in the corner of the Spring Creek Village shopping center northwest of Coit & Beltline Roads.

Easter Accents for your Home

Easter Sunday is only 3 weeks away! The time for accessorizing your living spaces has arrived. Luckily, Reba has plenty of accessories to choose from that will make your home look festive for your guests. These Bunny figurines will look cute on your dining table or entry table

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Your guests will need other serving pieces to remind them that spring has officially arrived. What about these colorful Martini Glasses? Wouldn’t they look great with a before dinner
cocktail? And who doesn’t want an after dinner cup of coffee in one of these colorful mugs? Any of the three serving trays shown can do double duty for serving both the Martinis and the coffee!

How to Identify Quality Furniture

Many times I am asked what my secret is to identifying high-quality furniture for consignment.  That is a great question for adult children of seniors who are leaving their homes and need to downsize.  Many times the answer lies in identifying the manufacturer of the pieces.  Some manufacturers have a reputation for excellence in every item they produce.  Among those manufacturers are Henredon, Drexel, Century, Heritage, Maitland Smith, Ethan Allen and Baker.  Their pieces tend to not be mass produced, made with real wood and featuring handmade tongue and groove construction, 8-way tied upholstery and quality finishes.

If you have pieces without those labels, they may still be quality furniture.  Look closely at the composition of the piece.  Is it made of real wooden planks or fiberboard?  In the case of a bookshelf, is it sturdy and capable of holding heavy books without bending?  Are the pieces warped or damaged by water?  Try polishing the furniture to see if there are any water spots noticeable.  Is any of the paint or finish flaking off?

For antique pieces, it is generally a good idea to not re-finish them.  The piece is usually more valuable without alteration from the original design in any way.  If the finish is obviously damaged, it can be stripped and restored to a better finish.  Aged shellac can be stripped off easily with denatured alcohol, to restore the original finish to its authentic state.  Always test an inconspicuous area first.  If the finish liquefies, it is shellac and you can use the denatured alcohol on the entire piece.  You should always consult a professional before painting or re-staining any antiques.
