Seasons are changing again despite the stretch of 90 degree temperatures. Looking at the calendar, our holiday season is just around the corner. Asian Inspired Accessories

Reba selects only the finest furniture and accessories for consignment in her store. As a result, she will have many unique accessories at various times in the store. Currently, she has a collection of Asian inspired pieces to accent your home’s décor. Shown on the left side is a beautiful brass vase with a hand painted Asian motif. The vase is about 2.5 feet in height, a perfect size for an accent piece on your coffee table, fireplace or entry table.
 
Another colorful accent piece is this red and gold storage trunk. It is made to look like a real steamer trunk, but actually features doors on the front that open into a two-shelf storage compartment. Very few stores these days tend to carry the quality furniture that was mainstream 20 years ago. On close inspection, it is rare to see all wooden pieces with tongue and grove construction or an upholstered piece with 8-way hand-tied workmanship. Furniture tends to be mass produced these days and may feature substitutions like particle board with a laminate finish. Be sure to closely inspect that great 4th of July price on a bedroom suite. This year at Estates Etcetera, we will be spending the day celebrating with our family and friends. For those of you that don’t know me, I have been an interior designer for the last 30 years in the DFW area. As a designer myself, I know firsthand it can be challenging to come up with items that work for some of your more discriminating clients, particularly if they are on a tight budget. At Estates Etcetera, we only consign upscale furniture in excellent condition. As you know, a quality piece of furniture is built to last through several lifetimes and never goes out of style.

Easter Accents for your Home

Easter Sunday is only 3 weeks away! The time for accessorizing your living spaces has arrived. Luckily, Reba has plenty of accessories to choose from that will make your home look festive for your guests. These Bunny figurines will look cute on your dining table or entry table
this year. If you need a new dining table she also has several nice ones to choose from either small and cozy or large enough for a house full of guests. These two are just a small sample of the available choices.

How to Identify Quality Furniture

Many times I am asked what my secret is to identifying high-quality furniture for consignment.  That is a great question for adult children of seniors who are leaving their homes and need to downsize.  Many times the answer lies in identifying the manufacturer of the pieces.  Some manufacturers have a reputation for excellence in every item they produce.  Among those manufacturers are Henredon, Drexel, Century, Heritage, Maitland Smith, Ethan Allen and Baker.  Their pieces tend to not be mass produced, made with real wood and featuring handmade tongue and groove construction, 8-way tied upholstery and quality finishes.

If you have pieces without those labels, they may still be quality furniture.  Look closely at the composition of the piece.  Is it made of real wooden planks or fiberboard?  In the case of a bookshelf, is it sturdy and capable of holding heavy books without bending?  Are the pieces warped or damaged by water?  Try polishing the furniture to see if there are any water spots noticeable.  Is any of the paint or finish flaking off? 

For antique pieces, it is generally a good idea to not re-finish them.  The piece is usually more valuable without alteration from the original design in any way.  If the finish is obviously damaged, it can be stripped and restored to a better finish.  Aged shellac can be stripped off easily with denatured alcohol, to restore the original finish to its authentic state.  Always test an inconspicuous area first.  If the finish liquefies, it is shellac and you can use the denatured alcohol on the entire piece.  You should always consult a professional before painting or re-staining any antiques.
